One of the most used of these formulae is the Hiley formula. The Hiley formula is: R = Whη/(S + C/2) where R is the ultimate driving resistance in kN W is the weight of the ram in kN.

Sanders' simple formula (R = Wh/8s, where R is the capacity, W the ram weight, h the drop height, and s the pile set per blow) used a nominal safety factor of eight, the term in the denominator.
